The Canary's Speech

For someone who prefers sandals over heels this came as a total surprise.'Style and me huh?Poo you gotta see me!' is what I thought when I saw this...
My blogger friend Poonam of Beyond Horizon has honored me with this award.
I am pretty poor at giving award speeches. But today I am going to try.All I have to say to you is Poo that you are one of the most likable people that I have come across till date.I am not saying this because you thought of giving me this.I mean it and words are all I have to prove. You deserve my gratitude for you have been there with me quite literally and 'very bloggingly'.To me the most satisfying part of writing a post is reading comments from people like you.You have helped me blog better and I thank you for that.We may not meet over cups of coffee,we may not share jokes and we may not lend our shoulders to cry but deep down in my heart I know there is someone just like me out there who reads me between my lines, who understands things I do not want to tell and who makes me smile with her every comment here on my blog. You made my day today Poo,a zillion bear hugs to you.Keep blogging, for your words have the power and panache, spread  them beyond every horizon!

In between all the thoughts and feelings that we give and take in this virtual yet beautiful world of bloggers,I give this award to these sparrows who have touched me with their words, they deserve this and more.Pass this and all happiness on,blogging is a pleasure because of people you.Thank you everyone. In random order:

Sameera-Life In A Jiffy-For the many bubbles she sends;-)

Bikram Mann-Me And My Random Thoughts-For being an ardent appreciator of my every post.

Sarah Malik-Embodying Emotions-For the serenity with which she carries us through the disillusions and delusions of everyday life.

Lakshmi-Confessions...of a lost female...-For holding my hand when I baby stepped with this blog.

Muddassir Shah-The Rosette Stone-For speaking his heart with the most simple words always.

Pratibha Singh-Pratibha The Talent-For the awesomeness of the talent that she owns.

And as a continuation of this speech I am supposed to blow my trumpet,a seven times exactly! Now that is like letting the monkey inside me on my favorite tree.So here is something about me that will make your brows and ears stand up:

  • Read a book and then talk to me.
  • I do not forgive easily, forgetting is a difficult and different story altogether.
  • If you have a sweet tooth for sweetcorn, you are my friend for life.
  • I can be ruthless, uncaring and barbaric if you intend to harm anyone who makes me smile.
  • The canary does turn into a penguin at times.
  • I hate the fact that my brother's hair is curlier than mine.
  • I became a blogger by chance,I will remain as one by choice.

"Your blog is your unedited version of yourself.Your blog is what you say when there is nobody standing over your shoulder telling you what to do.It demonstrates how you think outside the rules. It is one of the very few places where you have complete editorial control.Don’t take that for granted"-Lorelle.

I more than agree with this quote, cheers to everyone who work on their blog and keep their flow of freedom alive.

A good day to you all!:-)

A Letter To Uncle Pai

Dear Uncle Pai,

I climbed up the attic when I heard the news a while ago and took out a hard bound book, the thickest of the lot.It is a small compilation of my favourite comic book of childhood, today and forever. You,me and the world know it by the name TINKLE.The box is full of monthly editions of Tinkle,Tinkle Digests,Amar Chitra Katha Books bought through many years and some gifted by a cousin of mine during our summer holidays. It is like an old treasure trunk and I am its lone owner.Nobody else in the house is allowed to touch it.Amma's many attempts to sell the box to the Raddi shop have turned futile in the past, she has given up a long time ago.

What disturbed me was this thing,as I flipped through the pages I felt as though all our people in the book are disappearing into a bitter pensive.Shikari Shambu,Tantri the Mantri,Uncle Anu,Suppandi,Kalia and everyone else looked mum.The epics and fables reminded me again of our rich cultural heritage which I have now for life only because of these books. The hundred colours in the book appeared like a fading rainbow.I heard you are no more, maybe that is why everything seemed so.

Thank you for the many fond memories.I so much want to live those reading days again. While you leave us I have to tell you the ideas that I had while reading these books, some are really crazy.I always thought Shikari Shambu had no eyes because he lost them while finding the man eater.Whenever someone acted like a nitwit I used to tease them calling 'Suppandi'.Many of my science projects were inspired by Uncle Anu,because in him I found a teacher. The tantrums that I threw and the hunger strikes I made only to get a copy of the Tinkle Summer Special are still remembered at home. All the stories of our mythology that I know are from Amar Chitra Katha. These books have shaped my thinking and perspectives for a long time. They are a memorable part of my past.I have imbibed a lot of values from them and for that I will always be grateful to you.May you rest in peace.I will miss you.It is hard to find a story teller like you.Your books, words and lessons will always be with me for life.
Yours affectionately,
                                                                                                                                       Raksha.

Tinkle Uncle no little star...

Cash[ews] In On Poison

Kasargod is where my family roots are precisely. The landscape in and around this town bordering Northern Kerala and Karnataka is filled with cashew nut trees. This along with arecanut is one among the important crops of this region. Many of the households depend on it for their annual income. The colours of the fruit as in this picture does look appealing, but the issues that have been associated with its cultivation are nothing short of a tragedy.

I came across this news last night that the State Government of Karnataka has finally decided to impose a two month ban on a harmful pesticide called ENDOSULFAN.My mother went completely down the memory lane and started telling me how the residents of this area used to run outside the house when a helicopter passed in the sky.Little did they know that it was above them to shower white crystals of nothing but illness and suffering. It brought a mist of grief that would cover them for ages.

Way back between 1970s and 2000, endosulfan was aerially sprayed in this manner through many years over the cashew plantations.A bio accumulator by action,it is associated with a wide variety of problems like infertility, cancer, skin allergy, asthma, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, physical deformities and congenital malformations. It is disheartening to see children, men and women alike  ailing for no fault of theirs. Many organizations and people are fighting for this cause already. What everyone must understand that while rehabilitation and compensation is a part of the solution, the pesticide industry and the government are the only ones who can decide their fate. What is mockingly surprising is this pesticide has already been banned in 63 countries and India still continues to be its largest consumer!

It is enough late,I wonder why the ban here in Karnataka after these many years. What will happen after two months?Isn’t it a shame on our part when we let something like this kill our fellow human beings? Why does it take years to come to terms with a hard hitting fact?Of what use are our policies if they cannot save or make better lives? How difficult is it to make a sensible decision? Are we really developing?

We forget these questions in a blink because there are innumerable scams and scandals to laugh and talk about. And of course the world cup cricket matches will be soon on air to spend all our time. These campaigns and movements can always wait, there are many others who do it.How many of us do not think so?It is more than true that somewhere amidst all the progress in this country that we are proud of,we have actually stopped being humans.

Click on the picture for an enlarged view

Another truth that we all must know,it is easy to wake up someone who is asleep and make him get going but if he is ‘acting’ asleep no boulder falling on him can wake him up.And all of us belong to the latter category in  a hundred important issues.Ironical it may seem but in countless ways ours is a land of more than a billion scapegoats who refuse to decide their way of living by themselves.Guilt or accountability of any kind is for the administrators, none of the population’s business. While we are knowingly committing crimes and letting others do the same too,all we can ask each other is”So whats the score?”.

Here are a few links,do go through them to know about this prevailing poison and its grave affects:

A Nouveau Page

Blank and fresh stares a leaf of paper another on the dawn table
In restless waits with all the ink and feathers for blithe of a fable
If you cannot scribble, worry not and let those wishes for a float
Fold and cut a strip two from the sides to make your sailing boat
Else give some wings, throw your plane with a blowing winds far
Let it soar to rule a kingdom of boundless skies like a falcon czar

Clueless still, then write a letter to a good friend scorned and lost
Stamp the bitterness, crumple or burn not your sheet at any cost
Or meet a stranger on a not so lonely highway and learn his song
Like a note to remember pen down your tunes and yodel all along
Draw a secret map together, walk till a bruise shines on your knee
Hunt for your treasures dearest, like for honey dies a bustling bee

In this journey joyous, time shall fly and roads shall end so will life
Brave is a heart that crosses milestones a hundred against all strife
Sharpen the pencil of mind, cleanse the brush of every bloody deed
Paint colors bright or add a line to your log, let the world rest read
In ribbons of selfless love wrap every beautiful dream you now live
Keep the pile safe to share for each year brings a new hope to give !

HAPPIER YEARS AND MORE...TO YOU ALL!:-)

A Share Of Life

A plate of morsel seasoned with a little love and care
A teacher I call mine, no blackboards empty to stare
Is all I wish in school, without having to give any fare
Is this any treasure of millions that I seek as my share?

Take a bird’s eye view and it will look like our nation is crossing enormous milestones in various fields despite the scams and rackets that flourish in our administrative systems,or so our records say.And all that we are good at doing is,patting our back ourselves.Tragically when we [try] and look at the ground level, the scenario is completely different. We all know that our children are our country’s wealth, what we do not remember is that they are a vulnerable group. They compromise around 31 percent of our Indian population, but the attention their issues receive is not any close to what those which hit our daily headlines.

Malnutrition and illiteracy are amongst the many social issues that hinders a child’s progress.Sadly these are not due to diseases, illnesses or lack of resources. These are problems because we as citizens do not care enough. There are multiple matters intertwined, the causes and reasons, the results and effects which have brought this failure.Undernourishment starts right from the womb of the mother, after birth the prevailing poverty makes it worse. Most of the children do not even get to know that food and education are basic rights.

Many organisations, people and a part of the governance are striving and helping to meet these critical demands.Amongst them a noteworthy effort comes from The Akshaya Patra Foundation an initiative initially begun in Bangalore by ISCKON.I remember those days when we used to first sight their vans on Chord Road near the temple in Bangalore. The pictures of joyful kids on the van never failed to make us smile.Their motto“No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger”,with which they have grown on a magnanimous scale with teachers, volunteers, missionaries and the governments working to reach children across the country.

Hunger or poverty should never be a reason for a child to turn into a school dropout. As they say a fed child can learn better, children with filled stomachs now can concentrate more in the class. But for most of these kids food is not a mere incentive for attending school,it is their only nutritious meal of the day, such is their plight. And therefore they invariably attend. These problems cannot be made better overnight, they need efforts from each one of us.

If you see a poor hungry kid on the road and offer no help,do not blame the state of affairs.Do think for a while if there is anything that you can do to make his life better. Some food or money might do for a day but if you care to look beyond and can really help, make sure that he joins a school.Believe me you will be a special someone whom the child will always for his life remember.

Do visit and care to contribute:

This was around an year ago,a wonderful bunch of kiddo gangsters in a government school put up this act only because I agreed to take a video, hope this makes you smile!

Straight From Heart

This post is on the winner's list of YOUR LIFE CHANGING DEVICE CONTEST at Blogadda.

This one just mine!

"Give me your steth” so says the consultant to his junior doctors to examine the patients during the ward rounds. And then does rest of the hospital come to know that if a doctor does not have his stethoscope hanging around his neck or is not wearing his apron he has to be a consultant.Exceptions are those in a few specialities which rarely require one. When in the undergraduate period we start learning with a basic model which cost a few hundred bucks, there will be two or three elite ones in the class carrying a Littman’s which either is a gift from someone who is mighty proud seeing them become a doctor or they are those lucky kids of awesomely rich parents.

These days this little device comes with varied features possible, thank technology.Something what we people of this globe eat, sleep, talk, work and live with today. The elders have accepted it with some hesitation but keenness to keep in pace with their young peers whose life is totally dependent on it.From love letters to salary slips, all are mails in our inbox. We all have turned tech savvy, most of us will agree that life no more feels so very boring and same.

People who attach their emotions to objects are not to be considered materialistic always, their reasons can be manifold which may even seem peculiar to the rest of the world. We value things for the person who gifted it,or because it is one of the first ones we bought from our salary,or for the memories it carries,or the experience and learning it has given us,or simply that we liked it at the first instance and bought it.Everyone owns at least one product of technology which has brought a difference and made our lives easy.

Doctors are not any far behind, there are innumerable advancements in the field of medicine which has made our work complicated yet beautifully precise.Robotic surgeries,PET scans, painless needles, genetic therapy;you name it and we have begun it all. But there are some things which we cannot afford to do,even more are things that come under the ‘not to dos’.Such confusingly difficult decisions and actions may be pardonable by law or it may even escape punishment but no technology would satisfy one’s conscience, though not many own it.

Amongst the many gadgets and gizmos that make living a pleasure, this might be a weird choice but for a doctor like me the first stethoscope will always stay special for a lot of reasons. It has made me listen to a newborn’s heart beat and a frail heart stop, and now I have learnt to respect death as much as life.

During houseman ship it has made me hear many lungs breathe and bowels rumble. It has helped me measure blood pressure of countless patients every five or ten minutes in the ICU and post operative wards. There were days when we had to pay the chronically admitted patients in the free wards just to auscultate their chest and listen to all sorts of murmurs their hearts carried, sadly their disease was the only way left to earn a living. At the other end the kids in pediatric wards detested the presence of  us monsters who carried the big rubber tubing in their ears and went close,no amount of chocolates could help us make a deal with them!Sometimes it was given on a free rent to a senior and more than often it was lost and found in the nursing station, operation theatre, intern's room, canteen, dressing trolley or the patient’s bed.Frankly it has been in every nook and corner of the hospital and seen it all.

The traditional ones make just heart to ear conversation. There are polished versions now in the market, the electronic and digital kinds which are acoustically sophisticated but more than helpful. But they are not worth owning until there is knowledge enough which deserves them.I remember one of my professor saying in a clinics class “What the mind does not know the stethoscope does not make you hear, auscultation is an art and you all have to practise” which I guess has to be done all through a doctor's life.I sometimes am amazed how little things help us with diagnosing life saving conditions, provided one knows how to use it well at the right time. And a stethoscope is one of them, the woooooosh” and “clickkk” between the lub and dub” and a myriad of other sounds are the most difficult to catch but they have so much to tell.

With whatever little technology it works,my stethoscope is my life changing and saving device for it has made me listen to one of life’s most wonderful calls that say  “I need some help”, “I am feeling alright” ,“Thanks for listening”and more, straight from many a heart.

Even Old Uncle Santa might need some help from one, after all the travel in the cold this Christmas!

A merry one to all!

Goodness Sake

This post is on the winner's list of Good Over Bad Contest at Blogadda.

Harry pointed his wand to the Marauder’s Map and said"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good!" and off he went roaming around every secret passage and hallway in Hogwarts. We all are up to this weird kind of mischief every now and then.I believe that each one of us draw an interesting line between the good and the bad,a matter of perspective. However small be one’s gain, isn’t it a loss to another? What does it qualify as,good or bad?How much sin does it accumulate anyway? How often do we try to be more than humans?

We value a person’s goodness based on what they have in store for us.Isn’t it an evil thing to do,i mean nothing but to expect. We often come across people who we think of as ruthless doing random acts of kindness, and the vice versa happens too. Some great man once said "Every sweet has its sour and every evil its good".I think it is the fair balance which counts finally.

In some moments of weak selfishness we tend to overlook the repercussions that follow our acts. But what we forget is that we can do something by learning about the world we live in with a clear conscience and give goodness a try by helping others or even at the very worse, learn about how not to harm anyone.

For centuries we have been celebrating the victory of good over evil with a very raw interpretation.Amongst all the unpleasant things of greed, power, cowardice, money, theft, war, assassinations, terror and the endless we shall be highly fortunate if we make some place for and see peace, love, care, laughter, life, liberty, sense and determination.

A popular belief is that evil outshines everything in today’s world, maybe it does because the good stays silently hiding beneath. But there are a few who dare a fight and show.It is because of their kind acts of giving in the past and present that the world is still a beautiful place.I feel like a worm in these matters and I dare not talk about the blessed people and do them any less justice. My regards and respect to the many unsung heroes amidst us.Because to try and belong to that bunch of the brave requires a lot of selflesslessness.

Among the many who appeal to me here are a few that I shall thank,my Amma for literally living my life with me,my Appa for being the beautiful person he is,my friends who end up proving that they are the best in some way or the other at the end of it all.To live enough and to give more than enough is what I learn from them every day.Good enough. They bring all the goodness in my life. For me it all begins at home.

Of all the good I have learnt here is a story that Amma used to tell me during childhood,I remember how her eyes used to fill with tears during each of those narrations.Every now and then when I have to do or decide on something which has an effect on somebody else the melody of the song haunts me for some strange good.I guess every child here in Karnataka has heard this folklore at least once. There is an immense power that this story brings,it is for generations to carry.

"Punyakoti was one among the many cows of the cowherd Kalinga. They were like every day grazing in the green fields, dusk set in and as fate had it a tiger by name Arbhutta who was in great hunger attacks the herd. All the cows run for life and she is left alone,he tries to pounce on her.She convinces the tiger saying that her hungry calf is waiting back in the shed and she would return soon after feeding him.She makes a solemn promise and the tiger seeing her motherly concern lets her go.

She comes back to feed her calf and tells him about the incident and now that her final hour had come, she had to go.She asks her sisters and friends to take care of her son like one among them in her absence henceforth.

The tiger is stunned with bewilderment seeing her at his den only to keep her promise of not denying him his food.He is touched by her honesty and self sacrifice. In tears he questions himself if God would forgive him if he killed and devoured such a pious and truthful cow,in remorse and realization he jumps off the cliff and ends his life."

Simple yet intense..poignant yet beautiful!

Waka Waka eh eh...

It’s in the air…in the air…annnnnnnnnnnd…catch it!
Eeeks…not the cricket ka catch…the football fever…which most of us already have.

Tsamina mina… Waka waka eh eh…Tsamina mina eh eh...This time for Africa!

And before I continue...

Disclaimer: The author does not hate football and she is no fan either, sorry if her ill knowledge brushes more than three quarters of the worlds hearts. This article is solely out of the effects which the game is right now causing in and around her life, both good and bad funny. She hereby requests the reader to read and kick it away as lightly as possible.

Some questions have popped out of my very curious mind, I have had my share of inescapable encounters during this season, and some things have made me laugh along with the game.I am feeling feverish too!!!

Firstly I do not have any favorite team or player,I happen to know a few names because I get to hear and read about them, frankly some names are beyond my capability of pronunciations. All that I know is that there is the ball behind which all the guys run around to make the goal and then far alone in his den is a guy called the goal keeper ,whose prime duty is not to let this happen, and finally whichever team makes the higher number of goals wins the game.Sounds simple. My apologies,I choose not to know more.

Evenings are usually spent these days at home watching the matches and my ears have the pleasure of hearing the strange and loud bee hum like noise from the stadium, courtesy brother. Many of the crowd’s favourites are not faring well, but then the game is the IT thing happening .And when it is goal time wherever and whatever each one of us is doing all of us rush in front of the television and screech “GOAAAAAAAL” irrespective of the player or the team and he especially at the top of his voice.

Last week he was on a beat around the town searching for a jersey of his favorite team, but before he reached the place where he could get it,that some shop had run out of stock,Paapa kid came back home dejected and disappointed. It was hard to see his face with a smile lost.

The mother is also not far behind,I know she is a cricket fanatic,Kapil Dev being her all time favourite and now her love for football is coming to light, seeing these guys play ”This? This? This is football?Gone are the days of Pele and Maradona!” she remarks and makes her trademark head scratch and walks in back to the kitchen.A happy factor for her this time is her favourite, the lady Shakira with her swirls and swings singing” Waka waka eh eh”, what if we do not make it to the list of teams playing for the cup, we definitely have a signature dance step to our credit, the best greet gesture of the world.Take pride Indians, little things also make us happy.

A three year old girl lives in the opposite apartment who comes knocking at the door sometimes to play with me and guess what I had in store a few days back. She came like always and asked me to put this song on the laptop and there she was ready with folded hands telling”Akka akka, Wakka wakka”.I was too surprised to deny her partnership offer and then we both just swayed along.

There is an another video of the animals playing football. The lions, elephants, giraffe, ostrich, stags, bulls, meerkats, hippos, tortoise and many more. The enjoyment with which they play, very impressive. A lot of work and patience would have gone behind capturing and making those scenes. The monkey does make an expressive referee ;)

So as long as this fever lasts, I will be watching every match possible and singing everyday...

ReWinD RuN

I oddly remember a day during my lower kindergarten, away from home [means away from Amma:)].Appa left me in a strange place,an alien planet to be precise, there was this teacher whose mischief monger son I shall never forget;she used to get him to the school and leave him wandering amidst his victims in the class. He finished our lunch boxes, scribbled on our books, pulled hair and troubles more. And I belonged to the elite category of his hostages always,it was the third day of school I guess,he came near my bag and pulled out my water bottle, poured all the water on my book right under my nose;laughing like a baby hyena he pulled my cheeks and left me red in anger, and the next day….

I was in a different school! Thanks to the tantrum I threw at home that evening and refused to go to the land of the hooligan again, and fortunately Appa  understood his daughter's plight owing to his umpteen transfers! After that there was never a day when I disliked going to school.Me was always a happy girl.Wherever I have landed year after year from kindergarten to high school, all the places are for those fond memories of life.

‘June 1st’, a day other than our birthday when each one of us looked sparkling tidy and clean, thanks to this list-new school bag,new pencil box,new books, new class, new uniform, new shoes and well… old friends!!!
After those long summer holidays, a lot of us did frown and detest and so wished ‘Ah!God please let the fun stay around ’!Our prayers were heard every time, for we were given a place like home away from home, where we flew like birds in the boundless sky, where we learnt happiness doubles when we share, where we were made what we have become now.

A for Apple…B for…
2+2=
Baa Baa Black sheep…

Simple and easy they seem now but that was what our world was all about.Today we are sophisticated and smart and sadly life’s little pleasures are all spent!

Morning Assembly prayers,the National Anthem,the favorite teacher[first crush;)],the Miiissss and Maaaams,and the Saars,broken pencils,dirty erasers,ruled note books,first ink pen,ice creams and chocolates,PT periods,monthly tests,van uncles,book cricket and more cricket,height 6.10 weight 230 kg clash!!!Gang wars,lunch boxes,ribbons and ties,fake tummy aches, math tables,homework,cycle rides,India maps,public exams,punishments…oldest friends,life and more…nostalgia is all that remains with us.

All in the race, and we know not where we are going.Sometimes it is good to stop and turn around and look at those moments which never fail to make us smile!

So I wish....
